about

AO OUTRO LADO is an exploration of the harp in several styles of Brazilian music including choro, samba, baião, and Brazilian jazz. Harpist and composer Liza Wallace fell in love with choro music in her late teens and has spent the last decade developing techniques for playing this style of music on the harp. Under the production leadership of Ted Falcon, the album was recorded in Los Angeles by 7-string guitarist and sound engineer Nando Duarte. Also featured on the album is Clarice Cast on percussion, Adam Gust on drums, Ilya Portnov on chromatic harmonica, Fay Roberts on flute, and John Tegmeyer on clarinet. Each track has a unique instrumentation depending on the demands of the style and of the arrangement. Liza presents two solo harp arrangements of standards in the choro repertoire “Pedacinhos do Céu” and “Rosa”. As part of the band, Liza accompanies, leads, and solos, bringing the harp in and out of the focal point. Overall, the album takes the listener through different times and spaces in Brazilian music, shifting from one musical room to the next all through the lense of the harp.
